THE ADVENTURES OF JIMMY “NINJA” CHAIKONG
By JIMMY NINJA CHAIKONG It’s 5am; I can hear the brunette Lions blackberry vibrating, beeping and whistling Dixie. I’m really hoping to lay here until 10 am but she’s got the devil in her. A demon demanding its place at Thors table with the rest of the cockslinging nut huggers trying to be what this little girl was born to do, kick ass and look hot doing it! Preparing for my first NHB fights in the 90’s I thought I was the Frank Dukes of my day battling opponents in a middle weight division that ranged from 150lb-199lb. I was fighting Judoka, Karate, Boxers, Kung Fu fighters, street fighters, Muay Thai and just about anyone else who had the sand to step into the ring in those days. I was this Thai/Texan kid who had been training in Kajukembo under Professor James Cox at Premier Martial Arts. I had just seen my 1st UFC! I was Dreaming of Jits. I went from being tapped by everyone to tapping everyone in class in 6 months including my BJJ instructor there in Norman. After Jitz we would go to our local water hole and talk Rome, warriors and all things Hidaka Jime and my friend Steve who had been wrestling since he was 4 and me for 6 months asked, “how did you get so good so quick?” and I replied, “you guys like Jiu Jitsu, I am obsessed with it!” After only 6 months of BJJ and Judo with 2x Olympian Pat Burleson and monthly trips to see Carlos Machado on the set of Walker Texas Ranger I was fighting in my 1st 8 man tournament. I went undefeated from the years 1993-1997. In 1997 I fought 4x Jr. World Wrestling Champion Iranian Born Ali Alias in the USWF in Amarillo Texas, sister organization to Shooto, Japans very 1st and the worlds very 1st official mixed martial arts organization which gave rise to Antonio Inoki the founder of Pride Fighting Championships who fought the Greatest of All time Mohamed Ali. Coach Howard Davis Jr. close friend to the champ told me once, “Ali legs were never the same after that fight.” Shooto also gave rise to such superstars as Kazushi Sakuraba, Takanori Gomi, Bass Rutten, Frank Shamrock, Alistair Overeem and many more. After my loss to Ali Alias, Alias went onto Japan to face Hayato “Mach” Sakurai. Alias loses to Sakurai and “Mach” went onto fight a farm boy from Illinois who went on to become the greatest welterweight of all time the Great Matt Hues! In 1998 I fractured my back and NHB took a back seat to a record deal from Epic Recording president Ron Alexanburg. Ron had signed such greats as Michael Jackson, Meatloaf, Kansas, Heart and finally Jimmy Ninja. I ended up moving to south Florida in 1996. While my fellow travelers were looking for jobs I was perusing the yellow pages for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools. Now you can find a BJJ school next to every 7/11, there were only two schools in South Florida at the time, Pablo Papovitch Senior and Conan Silveira. Since Extreme Fighting had just come out and I had heard South Beach was topless, it was Conan’s place. I would later visit Papovitch seniors’ school in Pembroke Pines when Master Carlson Gracie came to the United States for his first clinics with now American Top Team Captain Master Ricardo Liborio who at the time was probably the greatest Jits fighter I had seen in person. Yet back to South Beach and the toplessness. Parking was hell. Getting to South Beach was hell. The dojo was hot as hell and hell I loved every minute of it. I had never been tapped by anyone since 2x Olympian coach Pat and Professor Machado and here I was in South Beach in 1996 in “Brazil” training with all Brazilians training the Carlson Gracie art being over ran by a guy I must have had 20lbs and at least 17 inch arms to his 13 inch arms and he was kicking my ass with Gi waza and Brazilian fire that to this day impresses this west Texas Chank. That fighter was “BRAGA.” Conan Silveira a legendary Carlson Gracie disciple and one of the world’s first Mixed Martial arts superstars was about to give birth to a migration of Atomic proportions. The Brazilians have arrived and American Top Team was about to be propagated into the Martial Universe.
Angela Magana So here we are in Farmington New Mexico. There are mountains, snow and not much else. She’s putting on her black and white wrestling referee shirt. She’s so cute. She looks like she is going to pull a shift at Footlocker but no she is going be who she is, one of the few females who is a not only a state sanctioned high school referee but she is also a state finalist in wrestling. In what was an all male dominated sport till just a few years ago, Angela Magana is a true inspiration to not only woman but everyone she comes into contact with. How fucking impressive is that? She finishes in the state finals and not just in the girl division. There was no girl division. She finishes in the finals in the men’s division.
After my back injury Music was my fall back. I didn’t have to throw anyone, punch anyone, kick anyone, or have any 225lb muscle head sit in my guard anymore and give me herniated disk. It was wonderful. Then a fellow Texan, I won’t mention his name ushered in the next Great Depression and live music in our hustling South Florida tourist driven economy was dying so obviously Jimmy Ninja needed a job. Where once I was being paid thousands to play gigs the world’s fastest growing sport was being touted as the second coming and I was being asked to fight Renato Migliaccio a 2x Roman Greco Brazilian Olympic team member and black belt in his country’s deadly art. Only one problem, I was booked at 145lbs and Renato was booked at 155lb. Matchmaker Paul Domenech was shitting his pants because he knew no man in his right mind could accept this bout. After selling 75 tickets and making 145lbs for the 1st time in my life it was a no brainer for Jimmy Ninja, “No Brainer” being the key word. Chaikong means big heart in Thai not big brain, so go figure, chalk one more up to 3rd world crazy, thanks ma. For the 1st time in my career I was losing to some of the best up and coming fighters in America, The Wolverine Mike Rio, Victor “Showtime” Delgado both at over 170lb (not bad for a featherweight) Jahmal McLennan (ATT), Shaughn Koukos (Renato Tavares), Jarrod “Wild” Card XFC Featherweight Champ and I was loving every minute of it. My back was holding up and I felt a fire burning in my soul that had not been there for years. The only thing that had changed was the size of my entourage but I found an unlikely clansmen cut from the same crazy Asian American roots (I love Asian people) who would lead me back to the path of Nak Muay, the Laotian Lover, Bounmy Somchay which translates to lucky and satisfied in Laos. Bou as he is affectionately known has put on some of the greatest battles, last minute at any weight and despite his record is immensely respected by the South Florida MMA community taking on such giants as undefeated Yuri Villefort and Street Legend undefeated Rene “LEVEL” Martinez from the Kimbo Slice underground scene who has made a legit name for himself as a professional fighter. Bou would go 2-7 before picking up wins at the Hard Rock hotel against World Combat League veteran Scott Mukkadam and his very own bad news bears story by defeating undefeated Rio De Janeiro BJJ black belt Maricio Armeli in Karla and Howard Davis Jr. Fight Time Promotion. It was here that Team Muay Lao the 1st all Asian Lead Mixed Martial Arts team was born with Jimmy Ninja Chaikong, the Heart and Soul Bounmy Somchay and the “Raging Asian” 125lb amateur prospect Nongchai Jason Somchay. Together we found brotherhood along with the help of other camps such as Charles McCarthy’s Boynton ATT, Cole Miller, and Wald from Team Noguera & the best boxing coach in the business Billy from Philly Padden. The South Florida MMA community continues to blossom into one of the most exciting mixed martial arts scenes in the world due to its large international community and beautiful year long weather. Which reminds me; here I am in the mountains of New Mexico being lapped for the third time by #4 female fighters in the world, ANGELA MAGANA, who I met for the 1st time upon my return to the cage in 2008 technically 15 years since my 1st Professional MMA competition and again 2 years later at MFA in Miami and I see something in this fighter. I see something in this woman that screams out auspiciousness. Something that is calling out to Bjorn Rebney CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships to give her a shot at Megumi “Mega Megu” Fuji coveted #1 spot. That is if she can defeat Mexican matador #2 “The Jaguar” Jessica Aguilar but that is a story for my next adventure.
